Game 6: Carter’s 3 Lifts UMass at the Buzzer

13 Nov

Chaz Williams drove to the basket with time winding down found a wide open Sampson Carter in the corner who then buried his only basket of the game,  a triple as time expired giving Massachusetts a thrilling 67-64 win over Harvard.

The game was your prototypical game where one team tries to impose its pace of play on the other.  Massachusetts constantly trying to speed up the Crimson with swarming pressure defense and Harvard wanting to slow things down and play in the half court.

With 10 minutes to play neither team would have a lead of more than four points, with three minutes to play Steve Moundou-Missi who was 1-8 from the field, hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Harvard a 62-59 lead.  Wesley Saunders made two more free throws to make the Harvard lead 64-59.  It was at that point that Jesse Morgan took over for UMass, first a jumper and then a deep three with 39 ticks left to knot the game at 64.

Morgan finished with 19 points and seven boards and Williams scored 12 with 10 assists including the one to set up the game winner.   Sophomore Cady Lalanne was a force on the defensive end with 13 rebounds and four blocks.

For Harvard Saunders finished with 18 and five assists and freshman point guard Siyani Chambers, who played all 40 minutes had 14 points with seven assists, five rebounds and just one turnover in a hard- fought  loss.
