Vander Joaquin was a force from the opening tap for Hawaii as they handled Houston Baptist easily. Joaquin nearly outscored the Huskies by himself in the first half netting 16 and grabbing seven rebounds on their way to a 38-23 lead after 20 minutes.
Hawaii pushed the lead to 22 in the 2nd half before the Huskies cut the lead to 11 late in the second half but Hawaii was never threatened earning a 73-60 victory. Vander Joaquin and Christian Standhardinger both recorded double doubles, Joaquin with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Standhardinger with 14 points and 11 boards. Brandon Speerman added 15 for the Rainbow Warriors.
The Houston Baptist Huskies were making their first appearance on national television (not a bad gig to do it in Hawaii) and the lack of size was a problem on the defensive end as Hawaii was able to get into the paint at will. Art Bernardi led the Huskies with 22 points and eight rebounds in defeat.
