The first half of the Gonzaga-West Virginia to tip off the tip-off marathon was enough to put some people (back) to sleep. Both teams got off to an extremely slow start, Gonzaga was able to get going, West Virginia not so much. As a result Gonzaga cruised to an 84-50 victory to begin the Tip-off Marathon.
After starting 1-12 from the field Gonzaga finished the half making 14 of their next 17 shots to take a commanding 45-18 lead to the locker room. The Mountaineers on the other hand finished the half 5-23 (22%) just 1-13 from behind the arc all while committing 13 turnovers.
Although West Virginia did a better job of holding onto the ball, just five turnovers, and scored more points in the 2nd half they were unable to make a dent in the Gonzaga lead. The Zags kept their big cushion largely due to the fact that since starting the game 1-12 from the field they finished 25-38 (67%) and by contrast the Mountaineers shot just 25% in the 2nd half and 27% for the game, including just 12% from the 3-point line.
Gary Bell, Jr. and Kevin Pangos paced Gonzaga with 15 and 13 points respectively, Guy Landry Edi added 14 points and seven rebounds and Elias Harris who didn’t score in the first half finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Aaric Murray (14 points) and Jabarie Hinds (nine points) shot a combined 9-18 from the field while the rest of their Mountaineer teammates shot just 16% for the game.
