Game 10: Michigan State Edges Kansas in Champions Classic

14 Nov

The opening act of the Champions Classic between Michigan State and Kansas certainly lived up to the billing.  The Spartans edged the Jayhawks 67-64 thanks to a layup with 13 seconds left by Keith Appling who finished with a game-high 19.

The first half saw the two teams play helter skelter at times with Kansas taking a 3-point lead into the break at 35-32.  The two teams settled down in the second half, after combining for 19 first-half turnovers there were just 12 in the 2nd half.

The Jayhawks extended their lead to five on a couple of occasions, but Appling and freshman Gary Harris put the Spartans on their back in the 2nd half combining for 23 of the team’s 35 2nd half points.  Harris finished the game with 18.

Kansas’ duo of Elijah Johnson and freshman Ben McLemore did their best to take the game away from Michigan State, accounting for 16 of the Jayhawks’ 29 points in the final minutes.  Johnson had a team-high 16 and McLemore added 14 in defeat.
