Favorite(s)- Southern (21-9 15-3)
The Southern Jaguars were the SWAC’s most successful team in the non-conference winning six games (although only 3 of them were against D1 competition) including a 53-51 win over Texas A&M just before Christmas. The back court of Malcolm Miller and Derik Beltran average 31.9 points and 10.2 rebounds for the Jags.
Contender(s)- Jackson State (10-17 9-9)
The Tigers started the SWAC season going 0-6 before finishing on a 9-3 run to reach .500. With the conference ravaged by ineligible teams Jackson State is the 2 seed in the tournament despite having just the 4th best record. The trio of Kelsey Howard, Dundrecous Nelson and Christian Williams combine for 42.8 points.
Team Likely to pull an upset- None.
3 Key Players-Kelsey Howard-Jackson State, Malcolm Miller-Southern, Jourdan DeMuynck-Prairie View A&M
The Tigers sophomore guard leads the team in scoring at 14.8 a game and grabs 4.2 rebounds. While he has the ability to score in bunches, he is wildly inconsistent having scored in single digits almost as many times 8 as over 20, nine.
The junior guard for the Southern Jaguars leads the team in scoring (16.0) and is second in rebounding (5.8). Malcolm Miller much like a number of players has the ability to carry his team offensively and the Jags have as good of a chance as anyone to win the SWAC.
The Panthers’ senior guard leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points, rebounds with 6.6 and steals per game at 1.5. He scored a season-high 27 points four times this season in wins over Mississippi Valley State, Alabama A&M and in a season splint with Houston.
