Favorite(s)-N.J.I.T. (16-12 6-2)
The Highlanders are experiencing a season of firsts. This is their first winning season and first regular season conference title as a division 1 program. NJIT dominated the Great West by going 6-2, narrowly missing a perfect season. They also have the runaway Player of the Year in Chris Flores leads the team in scoring and assists.
Contender(s)-Texas-Pan American (16-15 5-3)
The Broncs finished 2nd in the conference and have the league’s most well-rounded player in Brandon Provost who leads them in scoring and steals and is 2nd in rebounding as assists. He scored 24 in a season-ending win over NJIT.
Team Likely to pull an upset-Houston Baptist (12-16 3-5)
The Huskies were one of two teams to defeat NJIT and star Art Bernardi had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
3 Key Players-Chris Flores-N.J.I.T., Brandon Provost-Texas-Pan American, Art Bernardi-Houston Baptist
The 6-2 Chris Flores has led New Jersey Institute of Technology to its first conference championship. The Massachusetts native does a little bit of everything for the Highlanders averaging 17.2 points, 4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals a game. Flores’ first game of the season foreshadowed what kind of season he would have, scoring 28 in a one-point loss to Providence and is the biggest reason the NJIT is poised to make its first division 1 post-season appearance in the CIT.
Much like Flores at NJIT, Brandon Provost is the main cog for Texas-Pan American. The 6-3 native of Katy, Texas averages 14.9 points (1st on the team), 4.1 rebounds (2nd), 2.2 assists (2nd) and 1.1 steals (1st) a contest. The senior has led the Broncs to a 2nd place finish in the Great West and realistically the only team that can challenge NJIT for the title.
Aside from Flores, Art Bernardi may be the conference’s most dangerous player. The native of Brazil averages 14.5 points and 6.9 rebounds and has led Houston Baptist to wins over both NJIT and UTPA. If there is a team that could surprise in the Great West tournament, it could be the 6-9 Bernardi led Huskies.
