Angel Rodriguez transferred from Kansas State to Miami and is paying immediate dividends. Rodriguez scored 22 of his 24 points in the 2nd half including a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to give the Hurricanes a 68-67 lead. Another transfer for Miami took a while to get going but Sheldon McClellan who played at Texas prior to landing at Miami finished the game with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Gators were also led by a pair of transfers. John Horford from Michigan had 17 points and seven rebounds while Eli Carter formerly of Rutgers led the team with 21 points.
Miami trailed 54-40 at the 8:15 mark of the 2nd half before going on a 21-4 run to take a 61-58 lead with 2:36 to play. The teams traded baskets before Rodriguez drilled a 3 from the top of the key to give Miami its final lead.
The Gators jumped out to a 9-0 lead against in-state rival Miami in the first five minutes. Miami was able to cut the lead to the four a couple of times in the first half before Billy Donovan’s Gators finished the half on a 14-6 run to go into the locker room with a 33-21 lead.
